Celebrating nine generations

Over the years, our dogs have won Best Baby Puppy in Show, Best Minor Puppy in Show, Best Puppy in Show, Best Junior in Show, Best Veteran in Show, and Best in Show awards.

I originally started to show and breed Whippets in the late 70s under the affix "Kelbryan", having bred my first home-bred champion, Ch Kelbryan Nautical. After a break from showing mainly due to work commitments, I returned to showing under the affix "Cottoncove", after acquiring two bitch puppies from Rosemary Smith of the "Smithvale" kennel.

Shortly thereafter, in 1992, I imported a bitch from the UK, Ch. Savilpark Soft Breeze, which was influential in a number of outstanding Whippets - all of which became champions primarily for Rosemary & Corrine Smith.

I later imported a bitch from Rodger Stock of the "Courthill" kennel, "Music" Ch. Courthill Country Music which was a multiple Best in Show winner and the bitch line from which all current Cottoncove Whippets originate – 9 generations in all!

Music was mated to Ch. Barnesmore Soldier Blue of Glenbervie, owned by the late Jack Peden, and produced “Rane” KUSA National Dog 2001, Ch. Cottoncove High Society, which was also a multiple Best in Show winner.

After a fabulous show career, Rane was mated to “Adam” Ch. (UK, SA) Dumbriton River Rhapsody which was co-owned with Margot Pienaar of "Oracet" Whippets. Rane produced “Ava” Ch. Cottoncove High Thyme. Adam was out of Ch. (UK) Birkonbrae Forever Love  as well as “Merlin” Ch. Cottoncove Braveheart, which was out of our import Ch. Dumbriton Love Games which was out of Ch. (UK) Birkonbrae Everlastin Love being a litter sister to Ch. (UK) Birkonbrae Forever Love. For those of you that know and appreciate UK bloodlines, will know that the two Birkonbrae girls were two of the best Whippets in recent history. Both were campaigned very successfully by Patsy Gilmore in the UK.

The late Jean Pascale Botella then used Merlin to his Brazilian import, Alberto's Peppermint Pattie, which was incidentally never shown due to an injury as a puppy, but proved to be a fabulous dam that produced Ch. (USA, NOR, SWD) Sol y Sombra Palais Royal which was exported to the "Chelsea" kennel of Deann Christianson in the USA after the passing of Jean Pascal and having been purchased by Espen Engh of Norway who had seen the dog on a recent judging trip to South Africa.

Ava was mated to "Geti" Ch. & Ch. (USA) Chelsea Serengeti (which was also co-owned with the late Diana Hansen) was ironically sired by Ch. (USA, NOR, SWD) Sol y Sombra Palais Royal. From this litter I kept a male,  "Justin" Cottoncove Justin Thyme who was a Best Puppy in Show winner. Justin was later mated to an import from the famous UK kennel of Johnson & Jessie McLeod namely “Paige” Peperone Promise Of Gold to produce Ch. Cottoncove Peaches n Crème. Paige was co-owned with the late Diana Hansen.

Ch. Cottoncove Peaches n Crème, when mated to "William" Ch. Cottoncove Dancing Dual produced “Katie “ Ch. Cottoncove Dance With Me. William was sired by our UK import, “Isaac” Ch. Savuka Mambo Sun and out of “Greta” Ch. Sol y Sombra Peppermint Crisp, which was also bred by the late Jean Pascal Botella. Greta was a multiple Best in Show winner, Winner of the Supa7's as well as the Animal Talk Invitational Stakes. Greta was also out of Alberto's Peppermint Pattie.

Isaac was by Courthill Clockwork Orange an a half-brother to Courthill Croupier which was also co-owned with the late Diana Hansen. The sire of the very beautiful and successful “Mia” KUSA National Dog, Ch. Jesrae Take a Chance. Mia's dam was also Alberto's Peppermint Pattie.

Ch. Cottoncove Dance With Me has since had two litters - one by our Irish import “Brody” Ch. Ailesbury Storm Rider of Cottoncove, producing Cottoncove Storm Dancer of Tanyati JM (owned by Monique Hodgkinson) and Cottoncove Storm Finch (owned by Michelle Jackson). Both are currently being campaigned successfully. Brody is also of Courthill lines - his dam being Ch. (IRE) Courthill Coin Of The Realm.

2019-2020 - Katie's second litter was a dual AI litter by Ch. (UK) Falconcrag Another Class and Ch. Savuka Mambo Sun of Cottoncove. This exciting mating produced one puppy by Ch. (UK) Falconcrag Another Class, namely “Geoffrey” Cottoncove Kings Consort (owned by Sue Melvin) and three by Ch. Savuka Mambo Sun of Cottoncove, namely “Harry” Cottoncove Kings Courier and “Lilly” Cottoncove Kings Courtier. Lilly has, to date, had a wonderful show career with a number of qualifying CCs under her belt as well as a Best Baby Puppy in Show, Best Puppy in Show, two Best Junior in Show awards and Best in Show. Both Harry & Lilly are owned by me.

Some interesting facts. As can been seen from the above, the Courthill, Dumbriton and Sol y Sombra kennels have had a significant influence on the breed here in South Africa and, in particular, on Cottoncove.

And so the story continues!
