I have known this breed since the age of 8! My uncle was an avid hunter in Italy and introduced me to this wonderful breed.

Having always loved dogs, I never forgot these beautiful dogs, and after reading the books on the breed, I decided I had to I have one!

Reading through an Animal Talk magazine one day, I came across a photo that showed a man walking his dog, but you could only see the back of them both. I was so excited I called the editor of the magazine and asked if they could please give me the person's contact number.

Well, I managed to get hold of the person and, yes, it was a Spinone he was walking, and he wanted to know how I knew what it was!  Mike Donkin, in the Cape, and I became friends, and he promised me pick of his next litter. Later, I visited his home in Greyton and picked my Valentino (Vali) - the first Spinone to be shown in South Africa! Valie became a Champion, Grand Champion, and FCI International Champion! Vali, my heart dog passed over the rainbow bridge in 2022. He lives in my heart forever!

I also imported two Spinoni from the UK, namely Bannonbrig Regina Rude of Danien (Gina), and a brown roan, Affilato all Eyes On Me of Danien (Alfie). Both are Champions and Gina is also a FCI International Champion.

Here at Danien, we are committed to the Italian Spinone as breed, always striving for excellence.

As a Preservation Breeder, our commitment includes:

•  Improving the breed. We only breed when we feel that a combination of certain dogs could result in progeny that will leave a legacy. Thus we pay attention to showing all our breeding prospects in order to measure them against the breed standard and choose the most suitable partner for every dog/ bitch.

•  Genetic Health. At Danien, the genetic soundness of our breeding prospects is very important. For that reason all our dogs are health tested, and the results are published on our website. Furthermore, we keep the genetic health of our breeding prospects in mind when choosing their partners.

•  Puppies that are sound and healthy. Not only do we breed to better the breed, but we also pay attention to how the pups are raised. we put every effort into the little ones, socialising them as much as possible, stimulating them, and taking them for vet visits, to ensure that they are healthy and happy at the time of sale.

•  Ethical breeding and responsible breeding - quality being the key, not quantity.
