Steven D. Gladstone, of Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, has sat on the American Kennel Club Board of Directors from 2001 until 2009 and on the Board of the AKC Canine Health Foundation. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of AKC Companion Animal Recovery, Inc. and as President of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America . He and his wife, Marieann, have bred and shown Cardigan Welsh Corgis under the Aragorn prefix since 1974, earning more than 100 AKC titles in nearly every aspect of the sport in which a Cardigan can compete. One of their most cherished memories was winning BOB at the 1984 AKC Centennial Show in Philadelphia under the noted Cardigan fancier Dr. Ed McGough. The Gladstones have also owned Norwegian Elkhounds, German Shepherd Dogs, and Australian Shepherds.
Mr. Gladstone began judging match shows in the late 1970s and was first approved to judge Cardigans in 1988. He now judges the Herding and Working groups and about one half of the hound group breeds, Miscellaneous classes and Best in Show. International judging assignments have included appointments at All Breed and Specialty shows in Argentina, New Zealand, England, Canada, Russia, Finland, Denmark, Wales and Holland. He also judged the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship show in 2003 and 2005 and judged the Herding Group (including the Bouvs) there this past year.
Mr. Gladstone has judged Bouviers since the early 1990s both in America and internationally, having judged large local well supported entries/Specialties in Southern California, Michigan and Upstate New York a number of times and large high quality entries in Denmark, Buenos Aires and St. Petersburg, Russia. A recent judging appointment in Russia earlier this year included a large specialty entry of Bouvs. He has judged dogs under the FCI breed standard throughout the world and is well acquainted with our local breed standard as well as with the AKC breed standard for Bouviers. He highlights the experience during his judge's training of being tutored by Annie Clark when she was judging the National weekend in Michigan in the early 1990s as an invaluable lesson about the Bouvier breed as well as in procedures in the judging of large classes. Since then, as a very active Herding Group judge America, he has judged Bouviers an average of 20 times a year for the past 15 years.
Mr. Gladstone has been AKC Delegate from the Reno Kennel Club since 1999. Mr. and Mrs. Gladstone are members of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America, and each has served on the club's board of directors over the years. They are also longtime members of the Pocono Mountain Kennel Club and the Penn Ridge Kennel Club, both in Pennsylvania, and the Greater Naples Dog Fanciers in Southwest Florida.
