THE KENNEL UNION OF SOUTHERN AFRICA (KUSA) CODE OF ETHICS

This Code of Ethics applies to all KUSA members, affiliated club members, registered owners and breeders, and people who have:

~ applied for registration or transfer of a dog
~ applied for an affix
~ entered, handled, or exhibited a dog
~ officiated, judged, or taken part in a KUSA show

Failure to observe the provisions of the KUSA Code of Ethics can lead to disciplinary action in terms of the KUSA Disciplinary Rules (Schedule 1 of the Constitution).

DOs

Do keep your dogs properly housed, fed, watered, and exercised
Do ensure your dogs have prompt, professional veterinary care when necessary
Do provide adequate shelter for dogs that are kept outside
Do provide sufficient safe exercise area
Do ensure the exercise area is adequately walled or fenced
Do keep the exercise area clean
Do exercise control over your dogs when Postmen, Municipal Meter Readers, etc, need to perform their tasks
Do keep your dog on a lead and in control in public places
Do clean up after your dog
Do make sure that a person acquiring a dog from you understands the responsibilities of its care and welfare
Do find out if the new owner has the time and facilities to take good care of the dog
Do provide advice to the new owner regarding the feeding of the dog
Do hand over written proof of immunisation to the new owners together with future immunisation requirements
Do ensure that you inoculate your dog regularly at the proper time
Do breed only for the purpose of improving the breed
Do provide the necessary signed documents when you sell or transfer a dog to a new owner
Do report cases of alleged fraud, dishonesty, cruelty or neglect to the relevant authorities

DON'Ts

Don't let your dog be a nuisance to neighbours
Don't allow your dog to roam the streets
Don't knowlingly misrepresent the characteristics of a breed
Don't falsely advertise or mislead a person about the quality, performance, or health of a dog
Don't knowingly allow crossbreeding or breeding with an unregistered dog
Don't release a puppy you have bred to its new owner before it is six weeks old
Don't knowingly sell a dog to commercial pet dealers
Don't allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a competition
Don't have your dog's ears cropped
Don't indulge in dishonest, fraudulent, cruel, or neglectful actions
Don't participate in dog fighting
Don't breed a bitch before she is 12 months of age
Don't breed a bitch more than once in a period of 12 months
