    How does my dog qualify for a special event?

    Here are the qualifying criteria for South Africa's most prestigious events.
    Qualifying competitors are reminded to dress in a manner befitting the occasion.
    The Club or Sponsor may require competitors to wear branded bibs or arm bands, which should be returned at the conclusion of the event.
    The winner of the competition may not be used in dog food advertisements other than the Sponsor's for a period of one year after the event.

    SUPREME PUPPY OF THE YEAR

    Judging procedure: All entrants parade around ring prior to judging

    DOG OF THE YEAR

    Qualification criteria: Dogs and bitches that have been awarded the greatest number of Best of Breed Certificates at any All Breeds championship show

    Period of qualification:

    Between weekend 29 (previous year) and weekend 28 (current year)

    Entrance instructions: Entry form to Secretary before closing date
    Include photocopies of BOB certificates
    Judging procedure:

    First round of judging takes place in groups
    First elimination shortlists 6 from each group
    Second elimination in main ring shortlists 8 finalists
    Finalists compete for Dog of the Year and Reserve

    JUNIOR DOG OF THE YEAR

    Qualification criteria: Dogs and bitches that have been awarded the greatest number of Best Puppy Certificates at any All Breeds championship show

    Period of qualification: Between 1 August (preceding year) and 31 July (current year)
    Entrance instructions: Entry form to Secretary before closing date
    Include photocopies of Best Puppy certificates
    Judging procedure: First round of judging takes place in groups
    First elimination shortlists 4 from each group
    Second elimination in main ring shortlists 8 finalists
    Finalists compete for Dog of the Year and Reserve

    GORDON TAYLOR MEMORIAL CHALLENGE

    Qualification criteria: A challenge open to dogs that are bred and owned by the person who handles the dog. If the dog is jointly owned, a handler must be nominated on the entry form and no substitutions are permitted.

    Judging procedure: Judge shortlists 3 - 6 dogs and then selects the winner.

    KUSA NATIONAL DOG

    KWA ZULU NATAL TOP DOG

    Eligibility of dog: Dogs owned by KZN residents and registered (not disqualified or suspended) with KUSA
    Qualification criteria: Individual:
    Points earned for Group placings at shows in KZN
    Puppies:
    Puppy group 1st at an open show in KZN or group 1st anywhere in SA
    Team:
    6 - 9 dogs plus 2 reserves selected from each club to form a team
    Period of qualification: Calendar year previous to competition
    Entrance instructions: Automatic notification
    Judging procedure: Three judges award points between 1 and 20 to each dog
    First elimination shortlists 3 in each group
    Second elimination shortlists 7 group winners
    Finalists compete for KZN Top Dog
    Puppies compete for KZN Top Puppy

    WESTERN CAPE TOP DOG

    D.O.G.S. BEST OF THE BEST COMPETITION

    Eligibility of dog: Dogs owned by Gauteng residents and registered (not disqualified or suspended) with KUSA
    Qualification criteria: Dogs:
    At least one group win or placing at a championship show in Gauteng
    At least two group wins or placings at open shows in Gauteng
    A Best in Show at a Specialist Breed Show in Gauteng
    Puppies:
    At least one Puppy Group 1st at a championship or open show in Gauteng
    A Best Puppy in Show at a Specialist Breed Show in Gauteng
    Period of qualification: Calendar year previous to competition
    Entrance instructions: Automatic notification
    Judging procedure: All dogs parade prior to being judged individually
    First elimination shortlists 6 in each group
    Second elimination shortlists 2 dogs in each group
    Semifinalists compete on a knockout basis to shortlist to 8
    Finalists compete on a knockout basis to shortlist to 4, then 2, finally announcing the winners
    Puppies compete for D.O.G.S. Best of the Best Puppy
