Problem: Should I get a dog at all?

Hi Shannon

I have been having an ongoing debate on whether I should or shouldn't get a dog and was wondering if you could offer me some advice.

I live in a townhouse with a fair sized garden. I've trained and had big dogs all my life, so I know that I can offer a dog a great loving home.  I'm 27 years old and fairly active.  I will exercise the dog at least twice a day, my biggest concern is that I work all day, so the dog will be alone during the day.  I know many people do live like this, but I can't help but wonder if I am being selfish in wanting a dog and then leaving him alone all day. Your opinion and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

City Dweller

Hi City Dweller,

It would be so wonderful if all people considering getting a dog were to give it such thought and to put the dog's best interests first. Well done – you have made my day.

To be blunt I think it is somewhat selfish to get a dog if he is going to be left alone all day. There are many who do this and their dogs often develop behavioural issues as a result. What upsets me even more is the astounding number of dogs that do not develop obvious problems. This anomaly encourages the latchkey phenomenon.

You would have to think long and hard about this, but my advice would be to get a cat or two instead. Cats are not my forte, but the oriental breeds are quite doglike in their behaviour and this may be the answer for you.

Cats are perfectly capable of being trained to perform behaviours and you may even enjoy the unique challenge of training a feline.

Another option is to find a day-care facility for your puppy. These appear to becoming quite popular. Speak to vets and trainers in your area. A retired person may also be willing to puppy sit, but you would have to choose your sitter wisely for obvious reasons.

Ultimately you are the only one who can make this decision. The obvious compassion and consideration inferred from your letter leaves me with no doubt that you will make the right choice.

Best wishes

Shannon
